“Those who say it can't be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.”

Michael Rennie,
Global Leader - McKinsey & Company

Michael Rennie is the global co-leader of McKinsey’s Mindsets and Capabilities practice, specializing in performance culture improvement and behavior change in large organizations.  He works closely with Chairmen and their top teams on leadership performance.  Michael is a Director with 19 years experience with the firm and is currently based out of our New York office.  In his global role, he works with clients and McKinsey teams throughout the world significantly advising teams in 11 countries this last year.

Michael has co-led a 7-year research initiative with McKinsey into understanding the drivers of human performance and organizational culture, particularly focusing on how individual and group behavior and their underlying mindsets can be transformed.  This work has brought together the latest thinking globally from transformational and behavioral psychology, physiology, brain research, and physics.  When tied together with best organizational performance management practices, this has created path breaking approaches to culture change.

Michael specializes in facilitating top team mindset and capability transformation – at both the team and individual levels.  His distinctiveness comes from the combination of his experience in traditional business consulting and his own personal transformational journey that saw him overcome a life threatening cancer in his mid 30’s.  The result is a unique ability to tie ‘hard’ business reality and ‘soft’ human factors together seamlessly, creating the space for teams and individuals to challenge themselves at extremely deep levels and grow commensurately.

Michael has worked closely in his career with 35 Chairmen.  He regularly leads leadership workshops with top teams.  Average participant feedback scores, for all areas of these workshops, range between 9 and 10 of a possible 10.

His recent work includes working with:

  • The Chairman and top team of one of Canada’s largest five banks

  • The Chairman and global top team of one of the world’s big three accounting firms

  • The Chairman and top team of one of Australia’s largest 4 banks

  • The Chairman and top team of a major petroleum and gas company based in Asia

Michael is also playing the lead facilitator/coach role in McKinsey’s own internal partnership transformation program.  He has led workshops and supported office leaders in Canada, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Michael has a unique combination of twenty years business experience at the highest levels through McKinsey, and as a lawyer, and a deep understanding of the psychology and physiology of human performance.

Michael was a key advisor to the Australian Prime Minister during the period of the restructuring of the economy in the 1990’s.  He was a member of Prime Ministers leading policy think tank, the Economic Planning Advisory Commission.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Michael was an attorney with Australia’s leading law firm, Freehills.  He studied languages and history in Zurich, Switzerland and law and economics in Australia.  He has an MA in economics and philosophy from Oxford where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.
